River Tone 080311 : Chub to 3 lb 5 oz from the River Tone in Taunton on the fast water stretch. Most of the better fish came late in the last hour or so of daylight after a bright clear day with the river low and clear. Stick float and maggot, a lot of the fish were spewing crushed hemp and maggot. I fed 2 pints hemp and three of maggots. 0.16 mm diameter hook length to an 18 hook. © 2011 Brian Gay

Fishing Blog : CHUBBING TRIP This was my second visit of this season to the Dorset Stour at Longham but the first one in the genuine winter months being the last Friday in November. The river was looking ok considering there had been widespread ice and freezing temperatures across the region during the preceding week. The level was quite low for the time of year, not much above summer level and was running clear. Pace was okay if a little slower than expected. The run to the weir was vacant so I dropped in there and started the session casting big legered baits around the swim. Initially big pieces of bread flake, then cheese paste but didn't have a bite on either. In a way it didn't entirely surprise me because last winter I caught all my chub on this stretch using maggots. So a couple of hours in I switched to the stick float and maggots. For about an hour or so I fed a line mid river with about 20-30 maggots each cast. I generally find more success feeding before casting and running the rig through with the freebies.
