Angling Trust Winter League - Round 4

  • 6lb 3oz
  • Section Win
  • 2nd overall
  • Team won

Avington is one my favourite parts of the Kennet and Avon canal, I have had some great days fishing on this stretch of canal.  However due to British Waterways doing some work on the lock in Foxfield (rumour has kit building a marina) and therefore there is no boat traffic and the canal is very clear. The fish are shoaled up and lot of the better fish aren’t feeding, such as the skimmer bream and big perch.  The main fish that have been feeding is tiny little roach, 45-60 to the pound, so VERY small.  Also with another sudden frost Saturday night, this will and did have a negative effect on today fishing match.

I was pleased with last week’s Angling Trust winter league, as we were lucky enough to win the round as a team and we hoped to repeat last weeks performance.  We have a very good team draw, with Martin Phipps on A1, Paul Glenfield E1 and myself on an end peg things did look in our favour as end pegs were going to be worth their weight in gold, as this match was super tough.

My plan of attack was to fish joker in bread at 5 meters, lob worms down the track at 13 meters down the peg out of the way, and raw joker up the shelf in 2.5 feet of water.  I set myself  a target weight of 6lb which is likely to frame, this means catching 300 roach, which would be impressive or impossible, or catching a few lumpy perch.  Now last week’s Angling Trust Winter league I never had bite on lob worm, which did result me wasting a great deal of my match trying to catch nonexistent fish or I did it wrong?  Looking at last weeks fishing match I should of framed, as 4lb 6oz framed!    However, some of these perch run big and are up to a whopping 3lb and that takes a lot of small fish and so catching a couple of perch or even a perch are and will be match winning fish.

My match was a little slow to start with and then picked up and was catching a tiny roach a chuck after about an hour, with a few quick looks on the lob worm lines which resulted in nothing, however these perch are likely to feed early or late.  So kept of feeding and kept having quick looks, which do reward me in 4 perch in the end, which would have weighed 3lb 8oz to 4lb along with some bits for overall weight of 6lb 3oz.

The roach were tiny again this week and joker as a hookbait proved to be better and quicker

Looking forward to Open match next week (25th Nov) at Roadside / Cottages and Iron Bridge,  If you want to fish please ring Matt Herbert on 07588015323.

Manor Farm Leisure - Boundary Pool

Peg 19
75lb 9oz (almost had 40lb of skimmers)
1 st place
Very pleased to draw peg 19, as this is a good area on Boundary Pool at the moment.  Chucked the bomb and yellow meat for 15 minutes which resulted in one tiny F1.  Then went of the pole at 13 meters and caught steady for the rest of the match.

The pole line was solid all match.  Caught well on it all match.  Wish I started on it as I would of broke the 80lb barrier.

Ghost carp fought well on my light gear........

Angling Trust Winter League - Round 3

Avington, on Kennet and Avon Canal.

  • A3
  • 3lb 9oz
  • 3rd in section
  • Won section by DOUBLE default (lucky)
Kennet and Avon canal is a venue that I really enjoy fishing and have done for many years,  so I was excited about fishing match.  However, after a sudden frost, very bright and no boat traffic (as they are doing work at Foxfield) the canal is going to fish hard today.  Last weeks match was won with 5lb, which is a poor weight for Avington, as I think it's one of the best parts of the canal (there are many) but it is very scenic and is full of fish,  not a lot more you can ask for really.

My plan of attack was to start on bread, then fish worms after thirty minutes to look for a early bonus and then on bloodworm to back up my bonus fish!?  However, this didn't really go to plan,   I had a 6oz roach first chuck followed by 4oz roacb, looked good, but that was my lot!!!  After that I only caught tiny fish no matter what I done, no bites on the chop worm which was very disappointing, but the team won this round and we have a one point lead over Sensas A4 which was a high light of the day  Next round is again on Avington next week, hopefully it will fish a little better (all depending on the weather).

No perch this weekend, caught some tiny roach, 40 to the pound.  Plenty of bites but not enough to do any damage against the A1 and A2.

Well done to Colin Wainwright for winning the match with 7lb 3oz

Manor Farm Leisure - Windmill

  • Peg 15
  • 100lb 2oz
  • 1st place
  • 8 fished

An enjoyable day on Windmill Pool, plenty of bites until the last hour where it went a little tits up, where I fed too much. Very close bewteen me and Aidan Mansfield.

Fished 19 meters most of the match.

Windmill is full of fish and I was catching too many of these and therefore "uped" the feed, which almost cost me the match, as I wanted to encourage the better fish to feed.  This had the opposite effect

Manor Farm Leisure - Boundary

  • Peg 12
  • 42lb 4oz
  • 2nd
  • 14 people fished

Was pleased to draw peg 12 on Boundary Pool, as this is normally a good area and birthday boy Andy Burns was also pleased to draw peg 36 (who won his section).  Manor farm Leisure has been fishing well the last couple of weeks, and there has been some big carp coming out on single hooks baits, such as bread, meat and corn on all the pools.  Today's fishing match was won by Dennis Carter with 56lb, who had some nice carp on the bomb and bread.

One of Dennis big ghost carp.

Caught skimmers and f1's on the pole.  Great days fishing.

Kennet and Avon Canal

  • F1
  • 4lb 8oz (2 perch and around 50 tiny roach)
  • Section win and 4th overall
  • 56 fished

After a lot of heavy rain I did expect the Kennet and Avon canal to fish so hard and thought that 4lb would be a good section weight, especially for this section. I hit my target of 4lb, so was pleased to win my section, however I never expected to frame with this low weight.

Weights were tight and therefore everybody keen to see what everybody else had.

A couple of big perch on lob worms.

Manor Farm Leisure

  • Peg 4
  • 51lb (9 carp and 1 F1)
  • 4th overall
  • 10 fished

Strange day at Manor Farm Leisure, caught some lumps on yellow meat. However, in reflection I fished a way too negative match and for once I felt I didn't feed enough bait and this has cost me a frame place (2nd).

Well done to Shaun Little for winning with a whopping 140lb!!!
